  1. WriteMonkey : A great software that blacks out your screen, removes all distractions and leaves you just typing text. I also love the typewriter sounds it has. http://writemonkey.com/
  2. TheGuide : It is a simple overview tool for maintaining my structure and seeing what goes where. http://theguide.sourceforge.net/
  3. Zotero : Incredibly useful reference management software. Way way better than endnote. and auto backup of your notes and references on its servers. Can’t go wrong with this one http://www.zotero.org/support/quick_start_guide
  4. Xplorer2 : This is an alternative file management system to windows explorer and makes my life easier in a million ways.
  5. Focus booster or instant boss for keeping track of your time. Both are useful in reminding me how long i have worked, when to take a break, etc.
  6. Klok I use this to mark how much time i spent doing what. This for instance helped me figure out that my most productive days I managed to put in 3 hours of work on the PhD. Removed alll illusion of 8 hour workdays. Generates nice charts and you can keep track of how much time you spent doing what.Very useful, if like me, you have to send progress reports at the end of the month.
  7. Dragon Naturally Speaking For the days when I have no motivation to write. I speak instead.  Start early with this one as it will take at least 2 weeks, more like a month to train the software. It is a miracle worker for transcribing interviews, as you dont have to listen, pause type, rewind, but just listen on your headphone and speak into the mic. Priceless.
